When winter storms knock out your power, a well-stocked blackout kit is a great must-have to keeping your family calm, warm and connected. Here are the five absolute essentials that we recommend adding to your emergency kit:

1. High-Power LED Torch & Fresh Batteries

When the lights go out in a winter storm, having a reliable LED torch and fresh batteries is non-negotiable. Choose a torch rated at least 200 lumens with a rugged, water-resistant body. LEDs consume far less power than traditional bulbs, so a single set of AA or rechargeable batteries will last for several hours.

2. Portable Power Bank

A high-capacity power bank is your lifeline when the power’s gone. Aim for at least a 10000 mAh unit with multiple USB ports and clear LED charge indicators. This lets you recharge phones, torches or radios two to three times over. Look for models that support pass-through charging so you can top it up quickly once mains power returns.

3. Battery-Powered Radio

With no guarantee of mobile coverage in a blackout, a battery-powered radio becomes your emergency newsfeed. Opt for a model with AM/FM/SW bands and a hand-crank backup, so you can still catch vital weather bulletins even if the batteries fail.

4. Thermal Blankets & Insulating Layers

Depending on where you live, these can range in importance from non-essential to absolute must-haves. Mylar or fleece thermal blankets pack down small but reflect up to 90 percent of your body warmth. Combine these with extra woollen throws or a thermal sleep sack to stay snug overnight.

5. Comprehensive First-Aid Kit

Useful not just for blackouts, but all general emergencies, a well-stocked first-aid kit is always worth the investment. Alongside bandages, antiseptic wipes and blister plasters, include a compact CPR mask and any prescription medications your family needs. Check expiry dates every year and replace single-use items so you’re always ready for minor cuts, slips or sudden illness.
