Ensuring that your house’s electrical system is in fair condition is something every homeowner should be diligent about. Simple, regular inspections will help you catch minor faults before they escalate into shocks, fires, and costly repairs. Follow these simple essential electrical checks regularly, to ensure the safety of both your family, and your most valuable asset, your home.
1. Test Every Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm
Press the test button on each detector and listen for a clear, loud beep. Replace batteries at least once a year or whenever you hear the low-battery chirp. Properly functioning alarms are your first line of defence against electrical fires and gas leaks.
2. Trip and Reset RCD and GFCI Outlets
RCD (Residual Current Device) and GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets are both designed to prevent electric shocks in kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor areas. Push the test button until power cuts out then press reset. If an outlet fails to trip or will not reset correctly, schedule a professional home electrical inspection.
3. Exercise Every Circuit Breaker
At the switchboard, turn each breaker off and then back on. A breaker that sticks, sparks or trips under no load may hide a loose connection or an overloaded circuit. Those faults can lead to overheating and fire risks when heaters or appliances draw extra current.
4. Verify Dedicated Circuits for Heaters and Cookers
High-draw appliances like space heaters, dishwashers and electric cookers each need their own dedicated circuit. Make sure these lines have proper surge protection and aren’t sharing breakers. That reduces overload risk and ensures safe operation.
These quick home electrical safety checks can save you from serious hazards in the future. For complete peace of mind, we recommend booking a professional home electrical inspection in Auckland. To arrange your Rankin McManus safety audit, visit rankins.co.nz or call 📞0800 446 038.
